Not all fires behave the same. Some burn slowly and evenly; others are extremely hot, burning fiercely and quickly. Different fires have different colored flames. Some fires start easily; others don’t. Some fires produce deadly gases that could kill you if not ventilated. Some fires, like those used in blacksmith forges for example, are so hot that as objects come in contact with the flames they either burn up instantly or they are strong enough the withstand the flames and impurities burn off. Hebrews 12:29 describes God as a “consuming fire.” This paints a picture of God similar to this kind of fire. What might it look like to draw near to God in a way that refines us? This series will explore Hebrews 13 as a road map for spiritual practices that draw us closer to God in this way.
